“It’s such a wonderfully symbolic moment for Karen, Carolyn and Amanda to be connected to this amazing trophy in honour of John.  We know it means so much more when whakapapa is tangibly connected to a taonga” commented Selwyn Sports Trust General Manager, Doug McSweeney

The trophy will be introduced for the first time in 2023, and the team who demonstrates the true spirit of the Games will be chosen to receive it on behalf of the Reid family.

John’s daughter Carolyn, who works at Rolleston College and works closely with the Selwyn Sports Trust commented that the trophy has a really special meaning for their family and the connection to the Koru Games and the wider Selwyn community.

“Dad really believed in the spirit of competition and playing hard but fair, so it’s wonderful to be able to keep this mantra alive through this beautiful trophy.  As a family we are looking forward to supporting the Koru Games and we would like to congratulate all teams who are competing next week”

The Koru Games is in its 9th year and starts on Tuesday 19 September and runs for three days.
