Where it all began

The Selwyn Sports Trust was formed with a simple but powerful belief that when people are active, communities are stronger, healthier and more connected.

Since 2013, our role in Selwyn has continued to evolve alongside the district itself. What began as a small organisation with a big idea has grown into a trusted community partner, working across schools, events and programmes to create opportunities for people of all ages to move, play and connect.

Today, our focus is clear. We exist to inspire active lives and build connected communities through inclusive physical activity. This means creating welcoming experiences, removing barriers to participation, and ensuring everyone in Selwyn can access opportunities that support their wellbeing.

As we look ahead, our refreshed strategic direction sets out how we will continue to grow our impact, deepen our relationships, and strengthen the partnerships that help us deliver meaningful outcomes for Selwyn. It is this commitment to people, place and connection that continues to guide our journey.

Our Region

Selwyn is a place of contrast, growth and connection. From mountains and rivers to coastlines and plains, our region offers countless opportunities for people to be active, explore and come together.

It is also one of New Zealand’s fastest growing districts, made up of established towns, emerging communities and rural heartlands. Each has its own identity, strengths and needs, and together they create a diverse and vibrant region.

This diversity shapes everything we do. Our role is to support activity that reflects the places people live, learn and connect, whether that’s in schools, neighbourhoods, or community spaces across Selwyn.

The Selwyn Sports Trust plays a key role in bringing communities together through movement, creating opportunities that connect people to place, to each other, and to active, healthy lives.

Our Role in Selwyn

The Selwyn Sports Trust exists to bring people together through movement.

Our role is to create opportunities that make it easier for people to be active, connected and included, regardless of age, ability or background. We do this by designing and delivering programmes and events that respond to the needs of Selwyn’s communities and reflect how and where people want to be active.

We work closely with schools, clubs, community groups and partners to strengthen participation, support positive experiences, and build environments where physical activity is welcoming and enjoyable. Through leadership and advocacy, we also help shape conversations about wellbeing, access and the future of sport and recreation across the district.

Partnership is central to our mahi. By working alongside Selwyn District Council and other strategic partners, we aim to maximise impact, align efforts and ensure our work contributes to stronger, healthier and more connected communities across Selwyn.
