The Selwyn Sports Trust is thrilled to announce that Futsal and Goalball will be joining the Koru Games line-up in 2025, bringing the total number of sports on offer to an impressive 19. These two additions mark an exciting step forward in the Games’ continued growth! Creating even more opportunities for Year 7 and 8 students across the South Island to get involved, get active, and have a blast.
Partnering with Local Legends
To help deliver these new sports, the Selwyn Sports Trust has proudly partnered with Selwyn United Football Club for Futsal and the Halberg Foundation for Goalball.
“We’re absolutely buzzing to add Futsal and Goalball to the mix,” said Sally Marr, Event Manager for the Koru Games. “Every year we aim to create more inclusive, exciting options for schools. These two sports fit the bill perfectly. They offer something fresh, fun, and full of opportunity.
Futsal: Fast, Skillful, and Indoors
Futsal is a dynamic, small-sided version of football played indoors with a smaller, heavier ball. Known for encouraging quick thinking, fast footwork, and lots of goals, it’s hugely popular with tamariki across Aotearoa.
Jacob Grosvenor of Selwyn United Football Club is thrilled to be involved: “Futsal is such a great sport for developing young players' technical skills and confidence. Being part of the Koru Games is a fantastic way to showcase the game and get more kids enjoying it across Christchurch”
Goalball: Inclusion in Action
Goalball is a unique sport designed for athletes with visual impairments, but played by all. Players wear eye shades and track the ball using sound, making it a brilliant way to build teamwork, empathy, and communication.
Rebecca Gillett, Halberg’s Regional Adviser for Canterbury, says it’s a major step forward for inclusive sport:“We’re incredibly proud to partner with the Selwyn Sports Trust to introduce Goalball to the Koru Games. It’s such a powerful experience for students, it challenges their thinking, encourages teamwork, and gives everyone a chance to shine.”
A Record-Breaking Year Ahead
The 2025 Koru Games are shaping up to be the biggest yet, with 19 sports now on offer.
“To reach this milestone is something we’re incredibly proud of,” said Marr. “Every sport we add creates new pathways for participation. Whether it’s a student’s first time competing or they are coming back for their second year, there’s something for everyone.”
Registrations open at 9:00am on the 12th of May. Keep an eye on the Koru Games website for all registration information: www.korugames.co.nz
