The Oakleys iBike Programme has wrapped up another successful block of delivery, with 133 students from West Melton School taking part across six sessions over the past two weeks.
Designed to equip tamariki with the skills and confidence needed to ride safely in their communities, the programme saw students progress through Grade 1 before putting their learning into practice on the shared pathways of West Melton.
By taking students beyond the school grounds and into real-world environments, the programme provides a safe and supportive opportunity to experience common cycling scenarios, including navigating shared spaces, understanding pathway etiquette, identifying hazards, and applying road safety skills in practical settings.
Selwyn Sports Trust Executive Officer Mitch Prendergast says these pathway sessions are where students often make their biggest leap in confidence.
“It's one thing to learn a skill in a controlled environment, but it's another to apply it in the real world. Seeing students take those skills onto the pathways and realise they can safely navigate their community is incredibly rewarding.”
“The confidence that comes from these experiences often extends well beyond the bike. We regularly hear from schools and families that students are more willing to cycle to local destinations, be active outdoors, and explore their communities independently.”
A special highlight of the programme was welcoming Robin and Graeme Oakley along to observe one of the sessions.
As naming rights partners of the Oakleys iBike Programme, Robin and his family have supported the initiative since 2024, helping make cycle safety education accessible to thousands of students across Selwyn each year.
The visit was particularly meaningful for Robin, a former West Melton School student, who had the opportunity to return to his old school and see the programme in action.
“Robin's visit was a great reminder of why partnerships like this are so important,” says Prendergast.
“As a lifelong cycling enthusiast, he understands the opportunities that cycling can create. To see students developing the skills and confidence to safely enjoy a pastime that has played such a significant role in his own life was incredibly special.”
The Selwyn Sports Trust would like to thank Robin and the entire Oakley's organisation for their continued support of the programme, and the staff and students of West Melton School for another fantastic block of learning.
With more schools scheduled throughout the year, the Oakleys iBike Programme continues to play an important role in helping young people across Selwyn build the skills, confidence and independence to ride safely in their communities.
